The IRS Security Summit Urges Tax Professionals to Boost Security Immunity to Combat Identity Theft

internet security and data protection concept, blockchain and cybersecurity

The IRS Security Summit was created in 2015 in an effort to confront identity theft while saving the IRS billions in tax dollars.  Partnering with state tax agencies, software companies, financial organizations, and various tax professionals, the IRS Security Summit partners have made great strides in educating the tax community, securing sensitive data, updating online communication & reporting, as well as stepping up the war against cybercrime.

During the next five weeks, the Security Summit partners will highlight a series of urgent actions that tax professionals are being recommended to take to better protect their client data from theft and help ensure that progress is made in the area of tax-related identity theft.

Highlighted recommendations will be to:

  • Use multi-factor authentication to protect tax preparation software accounts
  • Sign up clients for Identity Protection PINs
  • Help clients fight unemployment compensation fraud
  • Avoid spear-phishing scams
  • Know the signs of identity theft

The summer series also coincides with the annual IRS Nationwide Tax Forums, which are being held virtually this summer.  The 2021 Forums feature three webinars focused on cyber- and information security that will be livestreamed as follows:

“Cybersecurity for Tax Professionals – Advanced Session,” presented by the American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights, July 28 at 2 p.m. ET.

“Helping You and Your Clients Steer Clear of Fraud and Scams,” presented by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. ET.
